Kanyakumari - Land of the Virgin Goddess

Kanyakumari addresses the southernmost point of peninsular India. It is the holy meeting point of the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Beach lovers often visit the place and enjoy the spectacular views of the sunrise and sunset. History of Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari has great significance in the Hindu mythological scriptures. According to the legend, Kanya Devi, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati was about to wed Lord Shiva. But as it was destined the marriage never took place. Rice and cereals stored for the weeding ceremony remained uncooked. As for the princess Kanya Devi became virgin goddess for the believers. Till date, devotees believe to find stones alike crops.

Best Time to visit Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari experiences pleasant weather all the year round. During summer, the temperature shoots high to 34.8 degree Celsius, while in winter the temperature falls down to 20.4 degree Celsius. Therefore the best time to visit this virgin land is from October to March.

Beside, you can have a memorable trip during the Chaitra Purnima Festival, held in the first week of May. Devotees often plan to travel Kanyakumari for the celebration of Navratri in the month of October and for the the Holy Annual Festival of the Roman Catholic Church.

Kanyakumari Temple:

Also known as Kumari Amman, the temple is home to Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. It is situated on the bank of Kanyakumari and devotees believe to take a holy dip before entering the temple premises. The diamond nose-ring of the deity, Padaparai(the footprints of the goddess), Vivekananda Rock Memorial and dhyana mandapam is the major attractions.

Nagaraja Temple:

A 20 kms travel from Kanyakumari, aid visitors reach Nagaraja Temple at Nagarkoil. The sacred shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. It is said that the temple has been constructed following the Chinese architectural style. Therefore it calls for a worthy visit.

Other nearby attractions are Vattakottai (6 kms), Udayagiri Fort (34 kms) Padmanabhapuram Palace (45 kms), Tiruchendur (85 kms) and Courtallam Fall (137 km)
